2N03 - PCM Decommissioning Operations Drummed Secondary Waste
The waste at LLWR is from the decomissioning of PCM facilities, contaminated due to the storage of PCM. The waste at LLWR mainly originated from Sellafield, but significant amounts were from other UK nuclear installations e.g. Harwell and Aldermaston and was initially classified as PCM. However, a project was started to recategorise the drums following some initial investigations and to prevent long term storage and significant costs. ~1500 drums out of the ~1850 were found to be suitable for VLLW and these have been consigned to an approved Landfill facility since early 2024. The remaining drums are predominantly LLW and are undergoing assessment for appropriate waste routing.

2N04 - LLW from PCM Operations
The waste primarily comprises of soft waste (predominantly PPE) and hard wastes (contaminated building materials) generated during decontamination and POCO activities in the PCM facilities on the LLWR site.

2N06 - LLW from Site LLW Operations
Waste is generated as a result of operations to handle VLLW consigned to an offsite facility and from maintenance of the repository infrastructure (e.g. leachate management system).

2N17 - Legacy Drums (Bulk)
Historically, drums of waste from numerous sites were consigned to the LLWR for interim storage, prior to transfer to Sellafield Ltd for storage and/or processing. During a detailed provenance investigation carried out during the early stages of the project, sufficient evidence was identified to suggest that the Legacy Drum population arrived at the LLWR Site at some point during the 1960's. Subsequent investigations identified that the drums may also contain uranium fluoride-based wastes.

2N18 - Low Level Waste Drums
Historically, drums of waste from numerous sites were consigned to the LLWR for LLW Disposal. They have been stored on the LLWR site for ~30 years. There is a total of ten x 400 litre drums. Re-characterisation of the drums has enabled 7 of them to be re-classified as VLLW (3 remain as LLW). This waste stream covers the full inventory of ten drums.

2N19 - Waste from PCM Decommissioning (Mag 10 Railbay only)
The wastestream comprises building materials/rubble and redundant equipment that became contaminated as part of the building's historical use as a Plutonium Contaminated Material storage facillity. This wastestream includes a number of waste types that will arise during building demolition and remaining waste from decommissioning (decontamination and deplanting) operations. The waste includes: • Concrete ‘breaker’ waste; • Brick/concrete ‘Dwarf Wall’ waste; • Concrete scabbling waste; • Mild steel from the railway line; • Degraded concrete/sludge.
