The sludge originates from routine filtration of liquid effluents. Some of the sludge has also originated from filtration of cooling pond water. Pond sludge is now accumulated separately (see waste stream 9C16). Contents is from the Backwash Tank 1 (0.7m3), Sludge Storage Tank 1 (0.2m3), and Sludge Storage Tank 2 (0.2m3).

The 9C917 waste stream scope encompasses all surface contaminated waste material (fission products and actinides coming about through direct, repeated or prolonged contact with ponds water and sludges) presenting an activity concentration sufficiently low enough for LLW disposal (or diversion), which has or will arise during the various stages of emptying and cleaning of both cooling ponds at Dungeness A.
