3L18 - Miscellaneous Sludges
Waste arises from the treatment of active effluent. Occasionally sludge cannot be transferred to purpose built storage vessels and is removed from process/treatment vessels into drums, IBCs or similar containers for storage prior to characterisation and disposal.

3L27 - Bypass Blowdown Filters (LLW)
BPBDFs remove particulate from the primary coolant circuit. The BPBDF is provided with a back flush facility for periodic in-service dust removal. During the blowback, the dislodged particulate is transferred to the DSEF. Both filters require replacement when differential pressure drops below a certain level.

3L29 - Fuel Plug Units
In advanced gas-cooled reactors (AGRs), the Fuel Plug Unit (FPU) is found at the top of each fuel stringer assembly in the reactor. The fuel stringer assembly and its associated FPU form a composite fuel assembly that is handled by the charge machine and loaded into the reactor as one unit. Once in the reactor, gas flow is forced up passed the fuel by gas circulators, cooling the fuel in the process. The rate of gas flow, and hence the temperature of the fuel, is controlled by a ‘gag’ in the FPU. The total length of an FPU is ca. 11.3m with a maximum diameter of ca. 0.3m
