5B25 - ILW Shaft (Contents)
Miscellaneous waste disposals from all operations at Dounreay from 1959 to 1977, mainly from early reprocessing operations and supporting operations i.e. PIE etc. Additionally, there is waste from other sites notably HMS Vulcan and Harwell. Post 1971, some "special" waste was disposed of to the Shaft; this included large items and a number of breeder and dummy breeder elements.

5B26 - LLLETP Sludge
This waste stream consists of sludges which will be produced as a result of operations in the Low Level Liquid Effluent Treatment Plant (LLLETP) at Dounreay. The sludges themselves will consist of a mixture of ferric and aluminium hydroxides.

5B27-1 - Thorium Nitrate (500L Drums)
Recovery of thorium from THTR spheres by crushing and rolling the spheres, followed by density based air-separation of graphite from fuel, which could then be disposed of separately. Fuel particles were dissolved in HNO3/NH4F solution, then separated by solvent extraction in mixer-settler boxes. The thorium nitrate was evaporated to concentration of around 400 g/l, then allowed to cool and settle.

5B29 - LSA Scale
Between 1989 and 2003 pipeline tubulars and platform components originating from North Sea offshore operations have been cleaned in a dedicated facility on the Dounreay Site. The cleaning operation is required to remove the Low Specific Activity (LSA) scale which is deposited on the pipeline and associated equipment while it is in service. This waste has been disposed of at Low Active Landfill.
