5B354 - PFR Ion Exchange Columns
The Sodium Disposal Plant (SDP) was used to dispose of bulk sodium from the PFR primary and secondary circuits. Initially sodium was reacted with water to produce NaOH that was treated with HCl to produce NaCl. The caesium removal plant removed radioactive contaminants from the brine by passing the solution through ion exchange columns. Ion Exchange Columns will also be used for cleaning of PFR pond water and for cleaning the effluent discharge from sodium cleaning operations within the Size Reduction Facility (PFRSRF).

5B357 - DFR Pond Ion Exchange Columns
The DFR pond facility was used for the storage of canned fuel pins and breeder fuel following their removal from DFR prior to reprocessing or post irradiation examination. Cs-137 contamination has been removed from the pond water using ion exchange columns containing IONSIVTM IE-96 ion exchanger. Additionally, a further 2 ion exchange columns were used containing an IONSIV Series A zeolite to increase strontium retention.

5B358 - Previously Disposed LLW
Historically LLW was disposed of to shallow burial facilities at Dounreay. These facilities do not meet current standards and it is now the intention to develop an appropriate engineering solution and an environmental safety case to leave the facility contents in situ i.e. not retrieve the waste.
