The waste arises from general site operations. Small quantities are from other sites (Chapelcross, UKAEA) and possibly from other sealed sources in the UK, e.g. MOD, hospitals, research establishments, universities.

2D400 - First Generation Magnox Storage Pond (FGMSP) Skips
Magnox skips arise from the transport and pond storage of Magnox fuel elements. 2D400 is a new waste stream for 2025 and will be subject to further strategic and technical development for subsequent RWI submissions.

2D401 - AHF Metallic uranium wastes to WEP
The AHF is used for the storage of an inventory of legacy Magnox and Windscale Pile fuel waste which exists in various physical forms, including un-irradiated fuel such as uranium elements, bars, and standards. Additionally, the facility stores irradiated fuel wastes in sealed bottles that have previously been stored in the FGMSP, as well as fuel pieces and debris; “Uranium Swarf” consisting of uranium swarf, cuttings, sweepings and flask debris; and mounts – thin slices of fuel mounted in epoxy and plastic rings which are used to undertake Post-Irradiation Examination (PIE). All of this material will be loaded into specially designed furniture in waste baskets, and then transferred to the WEP to be packaged into 500 litre drums using cementitious grout, for long-term interim storage in the Encapsulated Product Stores, and eventual disposal in a Geological Disposal Facility.

2D402 - AHF Miscellaneous beta gamma wastes to WEP
The AHF is used for the storage of an inventory of MBGW waste which exists in various physical form generated as a result of operations in the facility over the last several decades. This waste stream also covers wastes which will be generated from future operations. All of this material will be loaded into waste baskets, and then transferred to the WEP to be packaged into 500 litre drums using cementitious grout, for long-term interim storage in the Encapsulated Product Stores, and eventual disposal in a Geological Disposal Facility.
